Snoring-an introduction:
In America more than 45 % of normal adults snore at least occasionally, and 25 percent are habitual snorers. The problem of snoring is more frequent in males and overweight persons and it is usually grows worse with age. Actually, snoring refers to noisy breathing through the nose and the mouth during sleep and it can occur both when breathing in or out. Snoring arises when the air passage is blocked which inhibits easy & normal breathing and it often worsens when a person sleeps on his back. The sounds produced by snoring are actually caused by the vibration or flapping of the tissues lining the air passages a condition which mostly occurs during sleep and that is the reason that most snorers actually don't know they snore.
Causes of snoring:
Normally snoring occurs when air does not flow smoothly through the air passages, or when the soft tissues or muscles in air passages vibrate. Age can be a factor for this as it is found that the older one get, the weaker the throat muscles become. These weakening of the throat muscles cause the surrounding tissues to sag and cause them to vibrate. In some cases it is also seen that nasal blockages caused by allergies or a deviated septum when the partition between the noses is crooked can limit airflow through nose. This can force the breathing through the mouth where the more flabby tissues are located. In rare cases enlarged tonsils can also cause the obstruction. Excessive consumption of alcohol or sedation at bedtime can lead to deformities in the nasal pathway. Snoring can also result from being 20 percent over one's ideal weight. In cases of children, large tonsils and adenoids often lead to snoring.
Prevention:
Some of the common ways to avoid to snoring can be listed as avoiding smoke and alcohol before going to bed, reduction of body weight, establishing regular sleeping patterns sleep on side rather than sleeping on the back. Other than these one can also insist upon the usage of a decongestant before bed to relieve nasal congestion and also trying to sleep without a pillow may help effectively in this regard.
