Powerful Sleep

Sleep apnoea is a condition in which an individual suddenly wakes up from their sleep due to lack of oxygen. The individuals wakes up with a start and gasps for deep breaths of air. It is commonly associated with snoring. Snoring was formerly considered to be a joke. However the reasons that cause snoring are anything but a joke. People snore because the muscles behind the tongue relax to such an extent that it partially blocks the throat. This reduces the flow of air within the throat. When this narrowing of the air pathways within the throat takes place the individual begins to snore because the muscles are forced to make way for the air to go down the throat. In most cases there is only partial blockage of the throat. However when this blockage is a complete blockage, it leads to the condition of sleep apnoea. The body immediately alerts itself that the process of suffocation is underway and the person awakes from their sleep, takes conscious control of the muscles in their throat and allows air to flow down once again through the throat. This obstruction of the throat and the consequent awakening of the patient can take place hundreds of times during a single night.

Causes

Narrowing of the throat during sleep causes this disorder. Thus the factors that are responsible for this can include enlarged tonsils. A blocked nose tends to lower the pressure in the throat and therefore tends to suck the walls of the throat together. Being overweight and a resultant fat throat results in excessive fat deposits in the throat and narrows the pathway of the throat.

Treatments

The treatments for sleep apnoea could include simple ones such as loss of weight, not consuming alcohol 4 hours before sleep, keeping the nose as clear as possible, and sleeping in a semi-propped up position have all proved to be beneficial. Special dental devices have shown a great deal of success in reducing snoring. Nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is a very effective treatment for this disorder.
These are just some of the various treatments for sleep apnoea. Any treatment should be undertaken only under strict and professional medical supervision.
